Visit of Bishop Julius of Thika, Kenya
July 4th 2014
Members of St Mary’s Church were delighted to be able to welcome Bishop Julius Wanyoike of Thika, his wife Esther, Teresia, Link Secretary and Peterson Karanja ACK Financier to supper at the home of Catherine Heath who had been entertained by them two years ago.

Bishop Julius was in Exeter to attend the Installation of Bishop Robert Atwell [also see immediately below this item]. The Thika party came with their hosts and  Following a buffet supper Peterson gave us a short talk on the Five Talents Scheme which is an organisation helping individual entrepreneurs to start a business from very small beginnings. It then gives advice to them to grow and succeed; encouraging other people to do likewise. Our Parish of Gakui has benefited from our giving to this scheme.

New Bishop of Exeter - Robert Atwell
July 2014
The election of the new Bishop of Exeter [Right in photo - click to enlarge] was confirmed in a special service at Lambeth Palace.
The Right Reverend Robert Atwell’s election as the 71st Bishop of Exeter was confirmed in a service led by the Most Reverend Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury.
The confirmation of election service bestows the legal title as Bishop of Exeter to Bishop Robert, although he will not start his public ministry until he has met the Queen and taken an oath of allegiance.
He was to be installed in a special service in Exeter Cathedral in July 2014, but intends to spend some time on pilgrimage around Devon before then.
Bishop Robert said: “It’s a real honour to be confirmed as Bishop of Exeter and I’m looking forward to seeing more of the county before the installation service and spending time listening to people.”
Bishop Robert was formerly Bishop of Stockport, in the diocese of Chester.

CHAT Café 1st March 2014
Some 70 'customers' visited the CHAT Café on March 1st to partake of fine food and drink. They were entertained throughout the evening by varied and multi-talented groups of musicians and singers. The reason for the evening was to raise funds for CHAT the Churches Housing Action Team, based in Tiverton but providing housing support and advice throughout mid-Devon, including a number of people in Willand. The evening raised almost £400 which, with the benefit of Gift-aid, will add over £510 to CHAT finances. In addition, during the evening a donation of £300 was made to CHAT by Willand Community Composting Scheme. Everything about the planning, preparation, and the events of the evening showed evidence of the Lord's touch. An unbelievable evening.

Men’s Group Curry Night. Thursday. The Ostler, meeting from 7:30pm. Exploring Café Church. Many of you will already have met Ian Jarman who has recently been appointed by St Mary's Uffculme as Volunteer Co-ordinator for Square Corner and associated activities. Ian will be sharing a bit about his own background, his passion for exploring cafe church and other forms of 'alternative' worship, as well as his hopes, dreams - and biggest challenges - in his new role. Ian will kick off the discussion, but it will also provide an opportunity for us to explore our own understanding and hopes for how we can make church fresh and relevant to others in our communities.

CHAT

Support for CHAT – the Tiverton based Churches Housing Action Trust – can take many forms. Groceries for use by their clients, both housed and homeless; volunteering in a number of roles; regular giving through their Giver of Hope scheme, and specific money raising activities – all this, of course, covered with prayer.

Members of St Mary’s have be collecting in a different way during January .  They undertook to place an amount of money in a CHAT jar each time they sat down to a main meal. The jars were returned on 29 January – Homelessness Sunday. While not all monies have been counted it’s expected that some £450 will have been raised.  With the aid of localgiving.com that can provide ‘match funding' means CHAT will receive in the region of £900.

Further details about the services CHAT can provide, together with ways of supporting them, can be found in St Mary’s Church Hall or at www.chatmid.org

20 Nov 2011The Revd Prebendary Lynda Barley was formally installed as the new Canon Pastor in Truro Cathedral at Sunday Evensong

Lynda will be working primarily as Diocesan Secretary, responsible for the administrative, planning, financial and personnel matters for the diocese, but will be combining this with her joint post as the Cathedral's Canon Pastor.

Lynda comes to Truro from the Diocese of Exeter where she has lived and ministered since ordination in 1996. For 10 years, she was head of research and statistics at the Archbishops' Council, continuing the themes of some of her earlier work before ordination when she was a professional statistician and social researcher.

In recent years her priestly ministry has been split between some Devon villages and Southwark Cathedral where she has been an honorary chaplain.

Bishop Tim said, "We welcome Lynda and her family to the Truro Diocese. Her expertise and skills will make a valuable contribution to the challenging work that we face as an organisation while her ministerial skills will be well used at the Cathedral and across the diocese."

Lynda will be based at Diocesan House with some days allocated for her work as Canon Pastor.

Where? the Square Corner Café in Uffculme
WHAT HAPPENED on week 1:-
20-30 (20 youth) turned up. Selina and Vicki did most of the talking. Human Bingo was played - a sheet of questions -  names to fill in on the sheet - your sheet described something about a person, you had to run around the room asking if anyone fitted the bill.
They watched a slideshow of a song. They were each given the opportunity to frame a question about Christianity, something to be answered over the coming weeks.
Two of the youth, when asked afterwards, gave it a 9/10 and a 10/10. 17th July = FINAL WEEK.
YOUTH ALPHA CONTINUES:- back on Sun 11th Sept at 6pm in the Sq Corner Café; with Session 9 "Exploring Baptism and Confirmation"
