April 2011 Our substitute Vicar has gone walkabout again He has been feeding back news of his travels: most recent communication on top Dear All, At the beginning of March, I sent a round robin email which requested your menu choices (for those coming to the party)and to tell you about what was happening here. I wondered why we didn't have many replies, but we were pretty hectic and so I didn't get round to checking. But several who have now replied to my latest email...(thankyou!) said they hadn't heard about Amelia or Sarah so it obviously didn't get through to everyone. So I thought I'd fill you in with the dramas here. Sorry if you already know but I'm sending it to all cos I don't know who didn't get it. Hope it arrives in your inbox this time. Soooo At the very end of Feb Amelia was sent home from school with Tummy ache. We thought it was a bug as Sarah had had one a few days previously. However 3 days later, with no sign of improvement S&C took her to A&E, eventual diagnoses was burst appendix, she hads a 2 hour op in the evening, and was very poorly in hosp for 5days, with S&C taking it in turns to sleep at hosp. She was allowed home, but after 5 days at home she developed another infection (the docs warned us that this might happen) She had to have another 2 hour op to remove infected abscess between bowel and kidney, which caused internal bleeding, so recovery was longer because of that. She is now back at school but still delicate and not eating properly and still experiances pain. Sarah had her foot operation because we were here and so able to help. Fortunately Amelia had been home a week when she went in for hers op. She's had 2 procedures to help relieve pain in her feet and knee, on her little and big toe joints. The little one involved breaking her toe and resetting the joint, the big toe is less complicated and involved removing bone and gristle from the joint or something like that!!! The result is that she had to stay off her foot for 2 weeks, and now is only to take weight on her heel for 6 more weeks. She still is in a lot of pain, and is back at work but moving slowly. Cameron has been away for 2 weeks managing the Australian Youth Fencing Squad at an international competition in Jordan. He's back tomorrow. He had a lot of preparation to do for that brfore leaving during this very worrying time with Amelia and Sarah. Meanwhile Alan and I have been doing cooking, shopping, school runs, washing ironing,, gardening etc as and when needed. We're going away for a few days tomorrow. Staying in a cabin next to a lake. Looking forward to seeing you all in May. Have a great Easter. Loads of love Chris and Alan xxx Tues 8th March 2011 ![]() This was an 85cm Barramundi caught in a lake 2 hours north of Brisbane. If they are about half this size they are wonderful eating. Chris and I have been out and about quite a bit but mostly helping our daughter Sarah with her children. Amelia had a burst appendix so we needed to be on hand to help. Anyway were are off to the coast for a week starting tommorow (March 8th) about 4 hours drive north of Brisbane. Then the following week I am going south to Tasmania with Sarah's pastor and a friend over there. Fishing again mostly for trout. Tasmania is much more like England but is very high with half the land mass around 1,000 metres high. So I will be borrowing thermal undies!! We are looking forward to seeing you all again in May, and meeting our new vicar too. All the best Rev Alan Fri 4th March 2011 Dear friends, NEWS from Australia The weather continues very hot, sorry to rub it in!!! But also at the moment very wet. It's rained heavily all night and continues today, the house has a decent moat around it!!! In case you haven't heard, Amelia had an emergency operation on Monday evening for a burst appndix. Poor might, she was sent home from school on Fri afternoon, we thought she just had a tummy upset that Sarah had had the previous week, but we were all wrong! As you can imagine it has been a worrying time here, all week, with Sarah and Cam taking it in turns to sleep at the hospital with her. Unfortunately we had gone away to the seaside for a few days (Alan caught a huge barramundi which he was pleased about!!) so weren't on hand to help when we were most needed. But they've got good friends and neighbours who helped out till we got back, to keep life as normal as poss for Bryony. We've heard this morning that she can come out today. She will have heavy doses of antibiotic, and will be carefully watched for 2 weeks to check internal infection. Sarah is due to have a foot operation (bunyon type thing on 2 joints) in 2 weeks time, so we'll be good with nursing skills!!! Loads of love to you all from all of us here, Alan and Chris xxxx Fri 11th Feb 2011 Dear All, family and friends, We are having a lovely time presently in Malaysia. Kuala Lumpar city was fascinating. (Much more interesting than Singapore.) Had our feet massaged by doctor fish in the central market. Tickelish but a fun experience. The fish suck all the old skin from your feet! (Could these doctor fish be introduced to our local surgery!!!) We looked out of our room to view the twin towers, across a lovely park with fountain displays. There was a terrific lightening storm in the evening. Spectacular! Also visited the textile museum which was a joy being in air conditioning after the street 35 degrees! Malaya is a great ethnic mix of Malay, Indian and Chinese, so displays showed history of all these costumes. Fantastic jewelry, textile manufacture features highly here, so interesting information about Batik, Songket -woven patterns include gold and and silver thread, chinese silk. etc. Enjoyed varied architecture, colonial , moorish, old and new. Used local bus and tube, extremely efficient and cheap. (about 20p a journey) Food.....breakfast, international buffet style everything you could want...including a chocolate fountain!!! Fantastic fruit choice,Evening meals we've eaten locally, good value about 5 pounds each Now we are up in the island of Penang. A beautiful hotel, lovely gardens bordering sandy beach with water sports to watch, hang gliding towed by speedboats.Have balcony overlooking sea, beautiful sunset last night to welcome us. but very urban surroundings which is a bit disappointing for us. Visited night market just along from hotel , fireworks last night for Chinese new year, and tonight there will be a Chinese new year parade leaving from outside our hotel.. Going to the butterfly center and other places later. The number 17 has followed us all our maried life. Married on 17 th in 71.In Kuala Lumpar we stayed on 17th floor,(room 1701) travelled to Penang in seats17 e,f, on the plane and our room number here is 1725 ! Nice for our 40th anniversary!!! We leave here for Australia next Weds. We're now off to continue enjoying ourselves. Thinking of you all at home though....honest!!!!!
